Tips to Help Lower Heating Costs
Heating oil prices vary from month to month, but they always shoot up in the winter, when the demand is greater. There are a number of free, low-cost and long-term ways to lower your energy bills when the temperature outside drops.
For instance,
- Turn down the heat. Seems obvious, but lowering the thermostat just one degree can shave 3 percent off your bill. Turn down the heat when leaving for work and while you’re sleeping; stay snug when you’re in the house by wearing a sweater and slippers.
- Open the shades. Letting the sun shine in, especially those windows facing south and west, can greatly warm up your home, even in the colder months. At night, close curtains and blinds to lock in the heat.
- Create a seal. Make windows and doors draft-proof by installing caulking and weather stripping. Hang storm windows and doors. Plug up any leaks around the edges of your chimney, recessed lighting, sill plates, and electrical outlets. Lay down door sweeps to block off any open cracks under exterior doors.
- Close the fireplace damper. An open damper makes a hole in the ceiling that allows warm air to escape. Fires, while cozy, actually suck heat from a room.
- Free the vents. Vents that are blocked by furniture or carpets prevent heat from flowing around a room, creating cold spots.
- Insulate. Newer water heating units come with built-in insulation, but if yours is older, wrap it with an insulated jacket, especially if it’s located in an unheated space like the cellar or garage. In addition, wrap water pipes and ducts, which can lose heat when they run through areas that aren’t insulated.
- Take care of heating equipment. Poorly functioning heating units have to work harder. Replace or clean your furnace filter regularly; boilers that use oil should be cleaned and tuned annually, and gas furnaces, every two years. Each year, have your ducts inspected to make sure there aren’t leaks. And if your furnace is more than 20 years old, consider investing in a newer, more energy efficient model.
- Turn down the hot water temperature. Aim for 115 degrees Fahrenheit, which isn’t likely to be noticeable while washing dishes or taking a shower, but will save on resources.
